Shortly after, he got paired against a 2200-rated opponent. Instead of getting crushed, he walked out of the opening with a serious advantage: a position Stockfish rated at over +3 in his favor. He eventually lost the endgame, but that wasn't the point. The opening worked.
A few days later, the same plan against a 2000-rated opponent. Another win.
